The International Society of Ecotourism tells us that ecotourism is "responsible travel to natural areas. It is travel that helps to conserve the environment and improve the well-being of local people." Acapulco, on the southern curve of Mexicos Pacific Coast, is a superb base of operations from which to explore all the wonders and beauty of the tropics.<br /><br />Here you will find a profusion of plant and animal species especially adapted for one of two different climactic zones. The Southern Sierra Madres brush the coastline right at Acapulco. Up in the mountains you will find deciduous forest and temperate climates. Many of Mexicos indigenous peoples still live in villages that dot these mountain ridges. Down near sea level, the terrain is a tropical savannah, which is very moist during summer months and dry in the winter. Here you will find jungles, fresh water lagoons, and along the unpopulated areas of the rocky coast to the south of Acapulco small virginal beaches, some of which you can only reach by watercraft.<br /><br />

The Costa del Sol is an excellent destination for families, with an impressive array of activities to cater for all ages. <br />

Energetic members of the family won't want to miss out on a trip to one (or all) of the several water parks available. There's the Aqua Velis Water Park located near Torre del Mar, Parque Aquatica located in Mijas and Aqualand in Torremolinos. Natura Adentura located in San Pedro de la Alantara near the town of Marbella has many high octane activities to enjoy. Activities include rock climbing, archery, kayaking, paintball, quad biking and more.<br />

The sea life aquarium next to the marina in Benalmadena is well worth the visit, particularly for families with young children. Featured display creatures include the tank of stingrays, the shark reef, turtles and many more. One of the most impressive centrepieces is the walkthrough glass tunnel, where you can see the creatures swim over the top of you. Visitors may even be lucky enough to participate with the feeding. At the end of your visit you can relax in the caf or restaurant.<br />

Fuengirola Zoo houses an impressive and diverse range of creatures from around the world.<br />
Popular animals to see include orangutans, tigers, crocodiles and many more. The animals at the zoo are kept in humane conditions in enclosures not cages. During the months of July and August the zoo is open until midnight which creates a different ambience and allows you to see the nocturnal animals become active.<br />

For the sporting enthusiast Costa del Sol is home to many fine golf courses, offering the opportunity to play in glorious conditions. With around 60 courses to choose from in the region you're sure to find one that suits your level of play.<br />

Those seeking a slower pace are sure to enjoy relaxing on the Costa del Sol's many finely kept beaches. Or why not just enjoy a chilled glass of Sangria in the local bar!
